Dapper Drake update

Wednesday, May 31st, 2006

Well I figured out why my virtual desktop selector was no longer appearing in the KDE kicker panel. Apparently the upgrade reset a bunch of settings in my KDE preferences. Also it seems mp3 playback in xmms was disabled. Just a couple minor nuissances. Network Manager does not play nicely with my cheapo Walmart Balance […]

Long Weekend & Dapper Drake

Tuesday, May 30th, 2006

This past Monday was Memorial Day in the United States so we had a long weekend. My family came over and helped me put together a swing set for my son that my parents picked up for him. It was quite a bit of work and would of taken me a lot longer to […]

If you haven’t already please check out Elephants Dream:

It’s a 10 minute long computer generated film created using Blender and released under the Creative Commons license. It’s looks amazing and a big congratulations is in order to the artists behind this project. Last night on TLLTS we interviewed Bassam Kurdali who is the director of […]

7 days with Suse 10.1

Friday, May 19th, 2006

Well it’s been a week of running Suse 10.1 on my main workstation. Overall Suse is pretty nice even though there are some rough edges. Zenupdater in it’s current state is a piece of shit. It doesn’t work. I imagine the fixed version will make it into SLED 10 (summer release). Yast, while slow […]

Monday, May 15th, 2006

I got XGL working my Suse 10.1 install using this guide. It’s pretty straight forward to get it going. Yeah it’s nice eye candy:

I think the novelty wears fairly quickly. It’s definitely worth showing this to someone who thinks linux on the desktop still looks like CDE circa 1985:

24 hours into Suse 10.1

Friday, May 12th, 2006

I installed Suse 10.1 on my main workstation and overall it has been generally positive. The installation was very easy and took about 35 mintues to complete. I then went to the extras CD and added the proprietary stuff (flash, Adobe Acrobat, java& java-plugin for Firefox). The closed source 3D Nvidia drivers were not on […]

Misc items and Suse 10.1

Tuesday, May 9th, 2006

I have not posted in a while so I figured I would give an update. I have been working on an article on MythTV that I want to get published. MythTV is back in my brain since picking up a Hauppauge 150 tv capture card. Writing the article combined with work and family stuff have […]

Cheap VOIP phone

Wednesday, May 3rd, 2006

After reading this article by Joe Barr on economical SIP phones I picked up a Grandstream BudgeTone 101 for $50 plus shipping. It looks like a pretty nice phone for the price:

The phone has it’s own IP address can be used with or without an Asterisk server. To use it with Asterisk you have to […]
